When you start playing poker it is a whole new world and you might get lost inside it. You may assume that everyone else knows what they are doing, and you get intimidated with every move somebody makes. Other players do just the opposite, they rush and play, giving away their bankroll like Halloween candies. In order to improve your game quickly it is essential to find your leaks and fix them. Some of them are very common:
- You don’t have the patience to fold your bad starting hands. That will result in your silent bankroll decrease.
- You don’t have the heart to fold your great hands. As strange as it may seem, you must fold KK or three of a kind in some situations, for example when there are four spades on the turn and you don’t have any. To go on and bet even more in that kind of situation is just unnecessary.
- Ignoring your bankroll. If you have 100 $ bankroll it would be a disaster to play 10$/20$. It is obvious that you would lose your entire bankroll in a matter of minutes. Respect the basic theory that your buy in can be maximum 5% of your bankroll for the cash games and 3% for the tournaments. And don’t fall for the stories that on higher stakes they will respect your bluffs and raises. They won’t.
- Playing multitables. Some players can use three or five or even more tables at one time. You can’t concentrate on your game in such situations. If you must, play on maximally two tables at a time. In that way you will be able to spot your opponent’s flaws, keep your eye on the game, and still save time you’d spend waiting for the right hand.
- Playing when you are tired, sleepy, under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That is for the apparent reason. And similar to that, playing when you are agitated, nervous or disturbed by some life circumstances that must occur once in a while. That kind of mind frames can induce something called the tilt. Tilt is your greatest enemy. People on tilt make irrational decisions, looking only at the perspective of winning big, thinking that their opponents will just present them with their money. When you recognize a situation that is suitable for tilt to make its entrance, just stop. Do something else. You can play poker some other time.
