It seemed like a crime that was executed to perfection. The robber was dressed to obscure his identity, and was in and out of the casino, in less time than it takes to complete a hand of live poker. The only problem is, the stolen casino chips will be very difficult to cash in.

At 3.50 am on December 14, a man wearing a full faced motorcycle helmet parked his motorcycle outside Bellagio Las Vegas, went straight to the craps table, pulled out a gun, and grabbed $1.5 million worth of chips from the table before running out and speeding off on his motorcycle.

According to the details released by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, “The suspect is described as a white male adult, 5’10″-6′, 220 lbs. He was carrying a handgun and was last seen wearing a white motorcycle helmet, black down jacket, black pants and black gloves. The motorcycle is described as a 2009-2010 black sport bike.”

Chips will be very difficult to cash in

The chips that he got away with have printed values ranging from $100 to $25,000 but they probably cost less than $1 each for the casino to produce. The chips do not have any real value off the casino floor, so the robber would need to return at some point to the Bellagio, to exchange those chips for cash.

Other than the fact that the police are currently on the lookout for anyone attempting to make such a transaction, the chips themselves (especially the $25,000) also contain security features like serial numbers and RFID chips that will make them even more difficult to cash in without him being caught.

In the mean time, if someone tries to sell you Bellagio chips for a big discount, it will probably be a really bad idea to buy them.

In this part we’ll deal with the different stages of the tournaments and the different poker strategies to be used in each stage.

- The early part. In the early part every player has the same amount of chips. In that stage many players, especially in the low entry fee tournaments or the freerolls, tend to go all in whenever they get half decent cards. You need to do just the opposite: play tight and play only your strongest hands. When you bet, bet hard but reasonably. Your objective at this moment is to get to the bubble.

- The middle part. At this time players have already polarized into big, middle and small stacks. You need to play looser because most players will scratch and squeal to get into the money, and therefore fold more often. Try to steal and resteal the blinds. Don’t allow the big stacks to push you around. It is time to build your image here, and that will help you in the next stages of the tournament. But be careful not to do something too risky. You still need to survive until enough players fall out of the tournament so you can cash out (bubble).

- The late part. In this stage there are no middle sized stacks. That defines your online poker strategy. If you were lucky enough to be the big stack- just act so. Steel the blinds and bluff your bad cards. If you have small stack and definitely won’t survive the next round, you have no choice but to push all your money in the pot. When you do, try to have as few players as possible against you for your odds are better against, for example, only one player then against two or more.

- Bubble. When the number of players reduces to the number of the prize winners, the bubble bursts. Most players start being reckless and playing too loose. You need to tighten up again. That is your chance. If you play your best hands you will be able to get huge amounts of chips from the looser players.

- The final table. The decisions on the final table are highly circumstantial. You know the players well by now. You can decide whom to bluff and whom to slowplay. And the luck becomes an important factor.

To conclude, the general rule of the MTTs is to play just the opposite than your opponents do. If they get loose you tighten up. If they keep their stack, you go ahead and loosen up.Read also MTT strategy part I and how to win MTT.

This is the first part of our MTT strategy articles. Here we shall discuss the features of MTTs, general strategy and the structure of the opponents.

MTTs are different to ring games, and therefore the strategy for MTTs must be different. In ring (cash) games, every player brings a different stack of money into the table. That makes the difference between the players through the whole tournament. In MTTs, every player has the same amount of chips. For smaller tourneys that is usually 1500 chips, the bigger the tournament the more chip count gets. Great tournament have the starting chip count of 20 000 or so. So, in the early stage, every player has the same amount of chips and the equal opportunity to use them, unlike in cash games, where the player with more money can use it to bluff and manipulate the opponents.

Poker tournaments usually have the growing stakes, which means that, for example a tournament that started with 10/20 blinds grows into 50/100 in the next half hour and by the end of the tournament the blinds can be 10 000 / 20 000 or greater. That information is very useful for you must adjust your game according to the stakes. If you have 5000 chips and the blinds are 1000/2000 (and that situation occurs quite often), there is no point in slowplaying or overthinking. You need to shove your entire stack in order to stay in the tournament. But we’ll get to this part later.

The aim in the tournament is to win it, of course. But in order to do so, you must survive until the final table. To do that you must pass the bubble. So there are several smaller objectives to fulfill in order to reach the greatest one. What you need to do is to concentrate on the first objective to come. And to do that you must know your position at the tournament.

One might say that it is easy, just look at the tournament lobby and see. But it isn’t that simple. You can be first at one moment and end up losing all the chips at the next one.

According to Dan Harrington, what you need to do in order to assess your position in the tournament is to divide your stack by the size of the blinds. In that way you get the number of the rounds you can play without putting in a bet or a raise (M). That information can be used compared to other opponents’ M and especially if you are near the bubble or the final table. If your M is greater than 20 you should try to steal blinds and bluff, if it is one or less just go all in when you see the opportunity. In other cases, you do something in between those two extremes, depending on your M’s size.
